Produced for public television broadcast, Global Groove offers a glimpse into ‘the video landscape of tomorrow’, as described by the announcer at the beginning of the video. Global Groove guides viewers through a flowing stream of conscious awareness of cultural journeys around the world via the video medium. Unpredictable juxtapositions abound, from traditional Korean dancers merging with American rock and roll to Japanese Pepsi commercials transitioning into heavily processed images of Navajo singers.
Notable 20th-century artists such as John Cage and Allan Ginsberg appear alongside Charlotte Moorman, Pike's frequent collaborator, who performs their TV Cello invention and even participates in performances with Pike, who takes on the role of a human cello. With its spectacular explosion of images and sounds from various sources, Global Groove can be seen as an early example of video mashups.
