The piece draws inspiration from Weerasethakul's film ‘Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives’, which was released in 2010. A Letter to Uncle Boonmee frames itself as a letter to Uncle Boonmee, a character with the ability to recall his past lives, delving into his memories of past incarnations and his exploration of existence in the real world. Crafted with Weerasethakul's distinctive imagination and emotive approach, the work investigates the interactions between nature and humanity, the past and the present, and reality and imagination. Filming in Nabua, site of a bloody 1965 battle between communist farmers and the totalitarian government, Apichatpong employs a roving, floating camera and incantatory, omniscient narration to simultaneously evoke the dangerous cycles of violence and repression.
