Synopsis
Decoy 2 (2019) departs from a sense of being lost to explore the possibilities of connection between different domains and subjects. The artist makes herself a decoy, standing on a rooftop with a lightning rod in hand during a lightning storm warning, a performative act that attempts to posit a point of contact between herself and the outside world while luring (Decoy) a response. The space between the sky and the rooftop appears empty, yet is not: the lightning rod she holds fills that space with invisible tension, connecting the two domains in a state of latent contact. The anticipation born from the knowledge that lightning might strike accumulates layers of emotion (curiosity, fear, and tension), amplifying the space's psychological atmosphere. In this single-take video, viewers experience that time of tension in real time, drawn into the taut gap between the lure and the silence. Lightning ultimately never strikes, but the 'act of waiting itself' becomes the central event of the work. In actively exposing herself while leaving the outcome to the outside world, the artist comes to occupy a position somewhere between the active and the passive.
About the artist
Working across video, sound, and installation, Daum Kim begins from the most intimate textures of spaces and relationships encountered in daily life, exploring the layered strata of fine sensation and memory. By positing a hypothetical interface at the thresholds of everyday experience, the artist allows private experience to clash with or resonate against the grand narratives constructed by history, society, and culture, generating new layers of sensory experience. This approach focuses on making invisible affects and traces visible, delicately revealing the intersection between personal experience and social structure. Kim has held solo exhibitions at Primary Practice (2023), Factory2 (2019), Space Willing N Dealing (2015), and Art Sonje Center (2014), and has participated in group exhibitions at Pipe Gallery (2025), Nam June Paik Art Center (2018), ACC (2018), and MMCA (2016), among others.
