Shao Yinong and Mu Chen, as a married couple, inquire into the meaning of family from China’s traditional perspective. The Family Register series is a familiar family portrait for most Chinese in their thirties or thereon. The generation of the parents in the photograph has experienced China’s most rapid changes, exposed to socialist labor and education, as well as capitalist labor and market mechanism over time. However, the progenies only know the capitalist market and its driving logic. The artists show this generation gap through a panoramic family history fashioned after traditional Chinese records of genealogy. The top portion of the characters’ attire-Mao jacket and ‘construction’ jacket-harbor socialist symbolism, whereas the bottom portions of their accouterments-skirts, shoes, and suits-point to the reality of our time in the market economy.
부부인 샤오 이농과 무천은 가장 격동적인 변화를 겪고 있는 국가인 중국의 현대사에서 가족의 의미를 탐구하고 있다. 그들의 사진 속에 등장하는 부모 세대는 중국의 가장 빠른 변화를 경험했으며 시대에 따라 사회주의 노동 및 교육, 그리고 자본주의 노동과 시장 메커니즘에 노출되었다. 반면 그들의 자손들은 자본주의 시장과 그에 따른 논리만을 알고 있다. 작가들은 전통적인 중국 가계지도에 따라 구성된 파노라마식 가족 역사를 통해 이 세대 간격을 보여준다. 인물의 의상 상단인 마오 재킷과 '건설' 재킷은 사회주의를 상징하며, 의상의 하단 부분인 치마, 신발 및 정장은 시장 경제의 현실을 보여준다.
