Synopsis
〈Polyphony Club: Calling Expanded〉 (2025) extends the artist's ongoing exploration of "dissonance of chance and unpredictability" since 2021, giving form to the microscopic living worlds of the deep sea that emerge at the boundary between the real and the virtual through sensory disturbance. Noting that behind the internationally shared scientific data and analysis on Arctic sea ice and seawater research, strange and mysterious phenomena arise that resist explanation through scientific logic or common sense, the artist employs 'polyphony'—borrowing the structure of polyphonic music in a synesthetic mode—to juxtapose the material and immaterial worlds through perceptual disturbances such as auditory hallucinations and optical illusions. Using inaudible sonic elements including noise, signals, and wavelengths, the work constructs a hypothetical narrative of the microscopic world within the deep sea, capturing the ways in which information, objects, and stories ceaselessly flow and overlap through the multilayered structures of an ecosystem.
About the artist
Jade Sujin Lee focuses on invisible signs and sensations—light, memory, and sound—that emerge at particular thresholds of everyday life. Her work engages with the properties of urbanization, including discrimination, conflict, destruction, and migration, while revealing the layering of nature and heterogeneous spaces across time. Through this, she seeks to transform the condition of 'confrontation and conflict' that has persisted through the transition to industrial society into one of 'reconciliation and healing.' Drawing on imaginations of an arbitrary virtual world constructed by human and non-human beings alike, the temporality of 'past-present-future' is reconstructed through spatial installation, performance, narration, and video. Lee has held solo exhibitions at The Willow (2025), Platform-L (2022), and IAP (2022), and has participated in group exhibitions at Solol, Gangneung Museum of Art, Amado Art Space, MoCA Busan, Daegu Art Museum, Songeun, and ACC.
