Kak Budi is a Bajau Sama Dilaut weaver and matriarch living on Omadal Island in Malaysia. Born on a lepa houseboat, she carried and raised her eleven children. She dedicates herself to weaving, incorporating vibrant colors, and preparing pandanus leaves. In the film, we see Budi create the Tepo Putih Ikan Masin, a large mat crafted from old fish-drying mats and beach flotsam, symbolizing environmental challenges and cultural heritage. This process and Budi’s improvised song, heard in the work, encapsulate her community’s connection to the sea.
