균열과 질문 I

The French contemporary philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre once remarked, in a somewhat cynical tone, that humans are unhappy because they possess consciousness. The reason for this is that humans can look at themselves, much like in a mirror. In contrast, objects like desks or squirrels just are there in the world, and are simple and happy because they exist according to their nature. Compared to them, humans are unique beings because they are aware of their own existence. To borrow a philosophical term from Sartre, humans are “beings-for-themselves.” There is a certain gap between “the self that exists” and the “I that thinks about this existence”, a gap that prevents the two from being in full accord with each other. This gap causes humans to be constantly in discord with themselves, often leading to unhappiness. However, it is precisely this space that allows humans to reflect and develop. The screen is necessary to create a distance between us and objects, and even further, between the two instances within us. Without the screen, we would pass through the world without much thought and accept our own ignorance and subjugation without much reflection. In front of the screen, media artists create cracks in the world and pose questions. In this fractured world, the audience too will be prompted to think critically and ask questions.

프랑스의 현대철학자 사르트르는 인간이 의식을 가지고 있어서 (다소 위악적인 어조로) 불행하다고 말했다. 그 이유는 인간이 거울처럼 자기 자신을 들여다 볼 수 있는 데 있다. 반면 책상이나 다람쥐는 그냥 세상에 있고, 자신의 성향에 따라 존재하기 때문에 단순하고 행복하다. 이와 비교하면 인간은 특이한 존재라고 할 수 있는데, 자기 자신의 실존을 의식하기 때문이다. 사르트르가 쓴 철학적 용어를 빌리자면, 인간은 “자기 자신을 향한 존재”이다. ‘존재하는 자신’과 ‘이것을 생각하는 나’사이에는, 이 둘이 서로 합치를 이룰 수 없게 만드는 어떤 간극이 존재한다.
이 간극으로 인해 인간은 자기 자신과 늘 불일치하고 종종 불행하지만, 동시에 이 공간이 있기 때문에 인간은 성찰하고 발전할 수 있다. 스크린은 이처럼 우리와 대상 사이에서, 그리고 더 나아가 우리 안의 두 심급 사이에 어떤 거리를 만들어 내는 데 필요하다. 스크린이 없다면 우리는 별 생각 없이 세계를 스쳐지나갈 것이고, 별 성찰 없이 나 자신의 우둔함과 예속 상태를 수용할 것이다. 화면 앞에서 미디어아트 작가들은 세계에 균열을 만들고 질문을 하게 된다. 관객들도 균열된 세계 안에서 비판적인 질문을 생각하게 될 것이다.
