The exhibition title 《Meeting Halfway》 is inspired by Karen Barad’s (1956-) book Meeting the Universe Halfway (2007). The exhibition explores the process of crossing boundaries between human and non-human and re-establishing their relationships. It applies two key principles of Barad’s theory of “agential realism,” which argues against a fixed view of matter and instead sees it as constantly in a state of becoming.
Barad posits that matter is not static but fluid, based on quantum mechanics theory. She suggests that viewing objects as fixed state is an illusion created by modern science, and that matter is in constant motion and entangled with one another. Objects refer to the action of matter and the phenomena we observe, meaning that objects, artworks, and the exhibition itself become an ongoing action and phenomenon rather than fixed beings. Consequently, the exhibition highlights the action of matter by altering the spatial boundaries and the states of the artworks throughout the exhibition period.During the exhibition,
the partition walls that divides the space will be moved periodically, changing the walking flow of the visitors. The moving walls will encourage viewers to cross the invisible lines that traditionally exist in exhibitions—between artworks and the audience. Additionally, the exhibition will feature works whose positions, sizes, and states continuously change and move. Thus, this exhibition proposes the idea of the “halfway” not as a fixed line that definitively divides humans, non-humans, matter, and existence, but as a dynamic space that redraws boundaries and relationships.

전시 제목 《중간에서 만나》는 캐런 버라드(1956-)의 저서 『우주의 중간에서 만나기』(2007)에서 영감을 받은 것으로, 전시는 인간과 비인간 사이의 경계를 가로지르고, 관계를 재정립하는 과정을 표현한다. 본 전시는 물질을 고정된 상태로 바라보는 인간중심적 관점에서 벗어나 끊임없이 생성중인 상태로 바라보는 ‘‘행위 실재론’을 주장한 입자 물리학자 캐런 버라드의 이론의 주요한 두 가지 주장을 전시에 적용하였다.
버라드는 양자역학 이론에 기반하여 물질을 고정된 것이 아닌 유동적인 것으로 바라본다. 그에 따르면 사물의 존재상태를 정지된 상태로 보는 것은 근대 과학이 만들어낸 착시현상으로, 물질은 끊임없이 움직이며 서로 얽힌다고 주장한다. 여기서 사물은 물질의 행위이자 우리가 관찰하는 현상을 가리키므로, 사물 곧 작품 그리고 전시는 고정되지 않은 행위이자 현상이 된다. 이에 전시 기간동안 공간의 구획과 작품의 상태에 변화를 주어 물질의 행위성에 주목한다.
전시 기간 동안 공간을 나누는 가벽은 비주기적으로 이동하며 관람 동선을 바꾼다. 따라서 이동하는 벽은 기존의 전시에서 존재해왔던 작품 앞의 보이지 않는선, 또는 작품과 관객사이의 보이지 않는 선을 기꺼이 넘도록 유도한다. 또한 전시 동안 위치/ 크기/ 상태가 끊임없이 변화하고 움직이는 상태의 놓인 작품을 선보인다. 이에 본 전시는 인간과 비인간, 물질, 존재 사이를 확정적으로 가르는 선으로서의 중간이 아닌, 경계와 관계를 새로이 그리는 움직이는 영역으로서 전시를 제안한다.
