흙, 돌, 강철, 그리고 영혼에 관하여

Taking its departure from a poem by Senegalese poet Birago Diop, titled Les Souffles (1960), this exhibition chapter invites us to embrace elemental thinking, or to quote Diop, to “Listen to things / More often than beings / Hear the voice of fire / Hear the voice of water / Listen in the wind / To the sighs of the bush / This is the ancestors breathing”. It connects soil, stones, steel, and souls within one single energy field. Fundamental to the thinking of artists Ana Mendieta or Laura Grisi, the programme explores the possibility of oneness. It reverts to Giordano Bruno’s Concerning the Cause, Principle, and One, which states that “the Universe is one, infinite, immobile. The absolute potential is one, the act is one, the form or soul is one, the material or body is one, the thing is one, the being in one, one is the maximum and the best… It is not generated, because there is no other being it could desire or hope for, since it comprises all beings.” It sets up a conversation between four works by female artists centered on the relationship between the body and the four elements – earth, fire, air, and water – and matter. In so doing, it invites a broader reflection upon regenerative cycles.

아프리카 세네갈 출신의 시인 비라고 디옵의 시 <숨결들>(1960)가 제시하는 원초적 사고를 바탕으로 한다. “생명체보다 더 자주/사물에 귀를 기울이길/ 불의 속삭임을 듣고/ 물의 속삭임을 듣고/ 바람 속에서 듣고/ 덤불의 한숨 소리를/ 이것은 조상들의 숨결이다.”라는 시구처럼, 본 프로그램의 상영작들은 흙, 돌, 강철, 영혼을 아우르는 단 하나의 에너지장으로서의 세계를 조망한다. 아나 멘디에타와 라우라 그리시의 사고방식에 중요한 개념적 토대가 되는 일체성은 조르다노 브루노의 저서 『원인, 원리 그리고 하나에 관하여』의 주장을 소환한다. “우주는 하나이며 무한하고 움직이지 않는다. 절대적 잠재력은 하나이고, 행위는 하나이고, 형태나 영혼은 하나이고, 물질이나 몸은 하나이고, 사물은 하나이고, 존재는 하나이며, 하나는 최대이자 최고이다... 그것은 모든 존재를 포함하고 있기 때문에 욕망하거나 희망할 수 있는 다른 존재가 없기 때문에 생성되지 않는다.”특히, 여성작가 4인의 작품에서는 네가지 원소(흙, 불, 공기, 물), 물질, 그리고 인간 몸 사이의 관계를 중심 주제로 삼으며, 이를 통해 재생 주기에 대한 다층적인 성찰을 유도하고자 한다.
