A performance and a video, Sogi Mai features the artist exploring spaces of intimacy through the practice of sogi (so-ngi) with peers from diverse backgrounds. The sacred sharing of breath to greet and affirm each other’s mana – cumulative energy and presence – this gesture is here reference to his care and attention, while in residency in the mountains and valleys of Blackfoot, Stoney Nakota and Tsuu T’ina territory within Banff National Park, Canada.
The sound and video work AOAULI (VILIATA) gives voice and embodiment to pre-colonial Sāmoan ways of relating the world relayed in Eshrāghi’s extensive research. In their words: “AOAULI is a genealogy of our hxstories of visuality, and an embodied visual marking of the vā, relational space, that my body moves through as it visits Mparntwe in occupied Arrernte Apmere, and it returns form to collectively shared Sāmoan motifs thousands of years young.
퍼포먼스 영상 작품 <Sogi Mai>는 작가가 다양한 문화 배경을 가진 동료들과 함께 ‘Sogi’라는 의식을 통해 친밀한 공간들을 형성하고 탐구하는 모습을 담고 있다. 소기는 신성한 호흡을 함께 공유함으로써 서로의 마나(축적된 에너지와 존재감)에 대한 존중과 인정을 표하는 행위이자, 그의 보살핌과 관심에 대한 감사를 전달하는 의미를 지닌다. 이는 작가가 캐나다 밴프 국립공원 내 블랙풋, 스토니 나코타, 츠우 티나 지역의 산과 계곡에서 아티스트 레지던시를 진행하는 동안 수행되었다.
<AOAULI (VILIATA)>는 식민지 시대 이전 사모아인들의 삶의 양상에 대한 광범위한 연구를 기반으로 한 사운드 및 영상 작품으로, 그들의 목소리와 존재감을 드러내고자 한다. 애슈라기의 말을 빌리자면, “<AOAULI (VILIATA)>는 시각성의 계보이자, 점령된 아르렌테 압미레 지역의 음파른트웨를 방문할 때면 내 몸이 통과하는 관계적 공간인 바의 체현된 시각적 표시이며, 수천 년 전 사모아인들이 공유했던 모티프를 형체화하는 작업입니다.”
